About Greenfield

Greenfield has been Dade County’s seat since the town was laid out in 1841 and its first courthouse finished in 1842. The courthouse square remains the clearest organizing feature: the county building sits in the middle of the historic center, with local businesses around it. The city’s name came from the greenery of the original town site, and the 2020 census counted 1,220 residents. Greenfield’s location in southwestern Missouri gives the county government a fixed center in a farming and recreation county.

Current community life gathers around the square, the city park, and the schools. The 1888 Greenfield Opera House is used for summer productions by the Dade County Community Theater, while Greenfield R-IV operates the elementary school and Greenfield High School. The city park hosts Celebrate America, Greenfield’s Independence Day event, and nearby camping, fishing, hunting, history, and cultural attractions extend the calendar beyond downtown. That mix gives Greenfield a practical county-seat layout: courthouse and downtown in the middle, school campuses close by, and a civic calendar that moves between the square and park.
