Heron, MT

Heron is a small Sanders County community on the Clark Fork River, in western Montana close to the Idaho line. The village began in 1883 when the Northern Pacific Railroad made it a division point, and the rail corridor still gives the settlement its shape. Heron sits in a wetter pocket of Montana with a climate more like northern Idaho and the Pacific Northwest than the state's drier eastern plains. Nearly 34 inches of annual precipitation and wet, snowy winters help produce the forested, river-valley landscape travelers see from the road.

The town's present-day map is spread out: homes and rural properties around the railroad, the Clark Fork nearby, and larger services reached through Sanders County. The Heron community also sits on the route of local bicycle and farm tours, a nice fit for a place whose scenery comes from river, forest, and working land. Plains and Thompson Falls are the bigger regional reference points, while Heron stays small and tied to its old rail stop. Its local character is less about a downtown list than the setting itself: a railroad division point in a wet mountain valley, with the Clark Fork doing the most work on the map.
