High Shoals, NC

High Shoals is a Gaston County city named for the high rocky shoal in the South Fork Catawba River. The river runs through the community, tying the town to the larger Catawba Valley while keeping its own stretch of water at the center of the map. Swiss-born John Fulenwider established the High Shoals Iron Works around 1795, giving the place an early industrial history long before it became a modern municipality. High Shoals was once a company textile community and incorporated as a city in 1973.

Dean Black Memorial Park gives the city a present-day gathering spot, with a ball field used for baseball and softball practices and a shelter available for local events. Gaston County Schools serve students from the community, while city council, water, and sewer services handle the practical work of a small municipality. The South Fork remains the thread connecting those pieces. High Shoals is a town where an old ironworks, a textile past, a river shoal, and a neighborhood ball field all sit within the same Gaston County landscape.
