Hunter, NY

Hunter is a Greene County town of 3,035 people at the 2020 census, in the Catskill Mountains and Catskill Park. The town includes the villages of Hunter and Tannersville and hamlets such as Haines Falls, Platte Clove, Lanesville, and Edgewood. Its southern and eastern boundaries meet Ulster County, while Hunter Mountain rises to 4,040 feet, the highest peak in Greene County and second-highest in the Catskills.

Tourism has been part of the story since the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but the local map is more specific than a resort label. The town was formed on January 27, 1813, from Windham as Edwardsville, then took the Hunter name in 1814 after John Hunter. In the village, Camp Loyaltown has been a summer presence, and Hunter Mountain ski area shifts with the seasons: skiing and tubing in winter, biking, sightseeing, zip lining, and hiking in summer. Hunter is a mountain town whose calendar follows the slope and whose villages share one Catskill setting.
