Irving sits right in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, split into two distinctly different areas anchored by a massive international airport. South Irving retains its classic, historic roots with quiet residential neighborhoods, a traditional street grid, and the original downtown Heritage District. Head north, and the scenery shifts into Las Colinas and Valley Ranch, known for sleek office towers, modern apartment communities, and waterfront dining wrapped around Lake Carolyn. Las Colinas originally grew out of a vast family ranch in the 1970s, planned around scenic canals, wide boulevards, and the famous bronze Mustangs of Las Colinas sculpture at Williams Square. Beyond the modern high-rises, the city preserves a deep and diverse local heritage. The Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center honors one of North Texas's earliest freedman settlements, while the Ruth Paine House Museum offers an intimate look at local history tied to the 1960s. The social scene in Las Colinas centers on the Toyota Music Factory for live concerts and Water Street for patio dining overlooking the water. Getting around the region is convenient, thanks to the Trinity Railway Express running between downtown Irving, Dallas, and Fort Worth, along with DART's Orange Line running through Las Colinas straight into DFW Airport and downtown Dallas. For everyday trips within the city, local connector shuttles serve the main residential corridors, and free neighborhood circulators loop around Lake Carolyn.
