Johnson, OK

Johnson is a Pottawatomie County town just north of Interstate 40, with 457 residents in the 2020 census. County roads E1110 and N3460 lead through the community, and Shawnee lies nearby to the northeast. The town is in the North Rock Creek Public School district. Its setting is rural, though the roads connect Johnson to Shawnee, Tecumseh, Oklahoma City, and Seminole for regional work and services.

Johnson incorporated in 1982 because residents wanted a formal city boundary in response to Shawnee’s plan for a landfill near the community. On May 11, 1982, the vote was 77 to 40 in favor of incorporation. Johnson’s origin is a land-use story: residents used incorporation to control what could happen near the community. That decision still shapes the town’s municipal footprint and its relationship to nearby Shawnee. The town’s name and roads now mark a small Pottawatomie place that sits one mile north of I-40, with school life in North Rock Creek and broader connections running toward Shawnee and Oklahoma City.
