Kayenta, AZ

Kayenta sits at the crossroads of U.S. 160 and U.S. 163 in northeastern Arizona, about twenty-five miles south of Monument Valley. Because of its central location, it functions as a primary commercial and service hub for this corner of the Navajo Nation. Residents from Kayenta and neighboring communities rely on the town for daily essentials, from grocery shopping and healthcare at the regional health center to the local public schools run by the Kayenta Unified School District.

What sets Kayenta apart from other Navajo communities is its municipal structure. It is the only formally incorporated township on the Navajo Nation, which allows a locally elected commission to manage community planning, business leasing, and public utilities directly. Everyday life centers around family, school events, and longtime traditions like the annual Fourth of July Rodeo, with towering sandstone mesas and wide desert horizons forming the backdrop to a quiet, tightly knit community.
