Kayenta, AZ

Kayenta is a Navajo Nation community in northeastern Arizona, at the junction of U.S. 160 and U.S. 163, about twenty-five miles south of Monument Valley. The highways make it a crossroads for the northern Navajo Nation and the Four Corners region, while hotels, schools, shops, and tribal services give it a larger local role than its census label suggests. Kayenta Unified School District serves Kayenta and nearby communities including Chilchinbito, Dennehotso, and Shonto.

Kayenta Township is the only township formally established under Navajo Nation law. The Navajo Nation approved the township project in 1985 and 1986, giving the local government authority over land-use planning, business leases, homesite leases, and municipal-style services. That arrangement is the key to reading Kayenta: it is within the Navajo Nation and governed through a local township structure, not a typical Arizona city. The annual Kayenta Fourth of July Rodeo adds a recurring local marker, while Monument Valley keeps the regional travel map pointed north.
