Lame Deer, MT

Lame Deer is the headquarters of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and the place where the Northern Cheyenne Tribe’s government and Chief Dull Knife College meet. The community takes its name from Miniconjou Lakota Chief Lame Deer, who was killed by the U.S. Army in 1877 under a flag of truce south of town. A trading post followed in the late 1870s; the college, founded in 1975 and renamed in 2001 for Chief Dull Knife, now offers tribally controlled higher education. Lame Deer is southeastern Montana with a name tied to a painful history, a reservation capital, and a college carrying that history forward.
