Le Grand, IA

Le Grand sits across Marshall and Tama counties, with a 2020 population of 905. Mark Webb and James Allman laid out the town in 1852, naming it for lawyer LeGrand Byington, and the city incorporated in 1891. Its most distinctive physical feature is the yellow limestone ledge beneath the town. Local quarries cut that oolite stone for buildings across Iowa, including the Marshall County Courthouse, the Marshalltown library, and the State Historical Building in Des Moines. In Le Grand, geology is part of the town’s civic history: the same ledge that shaped local work also traveled outward in public buildings.

The post office opened in 1853, and the Chicago and North Western Railway reached Le Grand in 1862–63; the first train arrived on January 12, 1863. A grain elevator followed in 1870, tying the quarry town to the agricultural trade around it. East Marshall Community School District places its high school in Le Grand, alongside Ferguson Memorial Park, Pioneer Heritage Library, Community Center, Monet Center, and Larson Amphitheater. Those places give the city a present-day pattern: school and community facilities sit within a town whose older story was built from rail, stone, and grain.
