Leamington, UT

Leamington is a Millard County town spread along the Sevier River, where irrigation made settlement possible in the high desert. In 1871, settlers from Oak City built a dam and began a ditch; the first dam washed out, a second was built in 1872, and Thomas Morgan established the first permanent home in 1873. Frank Young named the place for Leamington in England. The railroad arrived in 1879, and the town developed as a string settlement with its main street running parallel to the tracks.

Stores, a post office, and a station agent once lined that rail-centered corridor. Farming and ranching remain the surrounding economy, while Leamington Canyon and the river give the town a clear landscape beyond the fields. Town government, a park, local businesses, and a museum keep the center in use, and the old charcoal kilns add another layer to the area's working history. Leamington's map still follows the original bargain with the desert: water from the Sevier, a ditch to carry it, and a railroad to carry people and goods out again.
