Leavenworth, IN

Perched on the bluffs above a wide bend in the Ohio River, Leavenworth is a quiet Southern Indiana community of around 400 residents. The town started along the water's edge in 1818, growing into a lively nineteenth-century port where steamboats loaded up on timber, farm produce, and local goods. As commercial river traffic slowed over the decades, the scenic water and the rolling hills of Kentucky across the river remained the natural heart of the area.

The community's present-day location dates back to the massive 1937 Ohio River flood, which submerged the original townsite and prompted residents to rebuild together on higher ground. Today, Leavenworth sits safely atop the ridge along State Road 62, home to a post office, a few local spots, and sweeping panoramic views of the valley. It offers a relaxed, small-town atmosphere for people looking for peace and quiet, close ties to the outdoors, and some of the best river views in the state.
