Lincoln, MT

Lincoln is an unincorporated census-designated place in Lewis and Clark County, extending along the Blackfoot River valley six miles east and three miles west of its town center. The 2020 census counted 998 residents. Meriwether Lewis passed through the region on his return to St. Louis in 1806, following a route Native travelers had used for centuries. Gold discoveries in the mid-1860s brought mining camps to the valley, and the present town formed after nearby Lincoln Gulch was abandoned. Rogers Pass, 18 miles northeast on Highway 200, is known for recording the coldest temperature in the United States outside Alaska.

Lincoln Public School District 38 operates a unified pre-K-12 system, with the Lynx as its high-school team. The river valley, Highway 200, and the school district give the CDP its practical shape, while the mining camps and Rogers Pass connect it to larger Montana stories about extraction, weather, and mountain travel. Lincoln is a spread-out Blackfoot Valley settlement, with school, river, and highway landmarks doing most of the orienting.
