Lincoln, VT

Lincoln is an Addison County town of 1,323 residents in the 2020 census, set at the foot of Mount Abraham in the Green Mountains. Quakers settled the area in the late 18th century, and the town was chartered on November 9, 1780. The name honors Major General Benjamin Lincoln, a Revolutionary War officer who served with the Massachusetts militia; it predates Abraham Lincoln by decades. The village center rests along the New Haven River, with a church, general store, library, Burnham Hall, and the Lincoln Community School gathered near Quaker Street.

The eastern edge rises toward Lincoln Gap and the Long Trail, which crosses the Green Mountain crest between Mount Grant and Mount Abraham. The gap reaches about 2,430 feet, while Mount Abraham rises to 4,006 feet. Mad River Glen and Sugarbush are within the broader mountain orbit, but Lincoln's daily life stays tied to its school, town meetings, farms, and roads along the river. The Lincoln Community School serves younger students, while older students use a choice and tuition arrangement. Lincoln is a hill town where a compact village center opens into a wide landscape of forests, fields, trails, and steep mountain roads.
