Lukachukai, AZ

Lukachukai is an Apache County census-designated place within the Navajo Nation, set among the Lukachukai Mountains in northeast Arizona. The 2020 census counted 1,424 residents. Indian Route 13 climbs from the community through the mountains toward Buffalo Pass and Shiprock, while the chapter area spreads across high desert and mountain country. Lukachukai’s name and landscape belong together: rivers from Buffalo Pass Gorge and Totsoh Gorge once flowed into a lake where the community now stands. The mountain road carries the larger geography.

Chinle Unified School District serves Lukachukai, with students zoned to Tsaile Public School for kindergarten through eighth grade and Chinle High School. The school road connects the community to Chinle, Tsaile, and other Navajo places, while chapter government and family life keep local routines tied to the land.
