About Marengo

Marengo is a town in Liberty Township, Crawford County, Indiana, at the edge of Hoosier National Forest and the karst country of southern Indiana. The 2020 census counted 829 residents. Marengo Cave, a U.S. National Landmark, is the town’s best-known attraction, while Patoka Lake and the forest broaden the outdoor map nearby. Roads connect Marengo with the Ohio River region and the small communities scattered across Crawford County. Cave tours put the town on travel maps well beyond Crawford County, and the surrounding roads carry visitors into the forest country.

Marengo Academy site

The settlement was first called Big Springs and was platted under that name in 1839. It later became Marengo, commemorating Napoleon’s 1800 Battle of Marengo. The cave was discovered in 1883 by Blanche Hiestand and her brother, and it has remained open to visitors ever since. Marengo is a small Indiana town where the old spring name, the cave underground, and the forest above ground all meet in the same local landscape.
