Marion, MT

Marion sits in western Flathead County beside Little Bitterroot Lake, about 21 miles west of Kalispell along US 2. The Great Northern Railway created the community in 1891 as the end of a spur from Kalispell, and for a decade the line carried the main route between Columbia Falls and Libby through Haskell Pass. A post office followed in 1892, giving the settlement a name and a place on the valley map. Marion had 1,119 residents in 2020. The railroad is gone, but its route still matters: part of the old grade is now the Great Northern Historical Trail, and the lake keeps Marion tied to fishing, boating, and summer cabins.

Lewis Kelsey moved his sawmill here from Somers in the early 1900s, adding a timber layer to the rail story. Marion School District 54 and the local library serve a community spread between highway, lake, and forest. It is a small Flathead Valley stop with a clear sense of how the railroad and the landscape shaped one another.
