Martin City, MT

Martin City sits on the east side of the Flathead River in the valley between Hungry Horse and Coram, with U.S. 2 running straight through the community. Its modern identity came with the early-1950s construction of Hungry Horse Dam, which reshaped the local map and brought construction crews and new work into the valley. The dam’s name reaches back further, to two freight horses that wandered away in the severe winter of 1900–01 and were found gaunt enough to earn the nickname “Mighty Hungry Horses.”

From Martin City, U.S. 2 points northeast toward West Glacier and the park country, or southwest toward Kalispell. That makes the place feel like a working roadside community at the edge of a much bigger mountain landscape: river, forest, highway, and the dam all shape the day. The nearby Flathead National Forest adds the camping and trail side of the picture, while Martin City’s own identity stays tied to the people and businesses that grew around the dam project.
