About McDonough

McDonough's historic square still functions as a civic center and a busy road junction. The Henry County courthouse stands beside the central lawn, while state routes 20, 42, 81, and 155 carry commuter traffic past the surrounding shops and restaurants. The city was laid out around a traditional square in 1823 and named for naval officer Thomas MacDonough; the present Romanesque-style courthouse followed in 1897. In July 2026, the free C.O. Polk Interactive Museum reopened in the square's 1940s post office with a digital timeline, projection displays, and a documentary about the Blacksville community. Its six-day weekly schedule gives the old center a regular public use beyond the Geranium Festival, which fills the square and adjoining streets on the third Saturday in May. Recreation and transportation extend that community activity beyond downtown. Alexander Park covers twelve and a half acres and provides four lighted softball fields, a paved walking track, a playground, pavilion, amphitheater concession stand, and off-leash dog area.

The route supplements city microtransit and county demand-response trips. From a 2020 census count of 29,051, McDonough reached an estimated 33,395 residents in 2025, about 15 percent above the 2020 estimate base. The 2020-2024 profile recorded 26 percent of residents under 18 and 55 percent owner occupancy. The median owner-occupied value was $314,600; median monthly costs were $1,791 for mortgage holders and $1,792 for renters. Median household income was $75,343, and workers averaged about 33 minutes of travel to work.
