Mechanicsville, CT

Mechanicsville is an unincorporated Thompson census-designated place at the southern end of Windham County, with Route 12 running along the east bank of the French River. Putnam is just south, North Grosvenordale is north, and the river valley gives the community its long, narrow shape. The village dates to 1827, when the Mechanics' Company built a woolen mill, sawmill, and workers' housing beside the river. That early mill is the reason the name stuck: this was a place organized around people who worked with machinery.

Mechanicsville later picked up the usual New England transportation layers. The Providence and Worcester Railroad still passes through, while the former Air Line railroad route now carries the Air Line State Park Trail. The trail's Thompson access is at Riverside Drive in Mechanicsville, and Mechanicsville Park adds a small neighborhood green. Kenney's Store and post office history also survives in the Thompson Historical Society's local exhibits. This is a river-and-rail village whose old mill function has turned into a mix of homes, road traffic, trail users, and local memory.
