Mokena grew up around the railroad in the 1850s, and that history still shapes the character of this southwest suburb. Commuters enjoy an easy ride into downtown Chicago or out toward Joliet thanks to two Metra stops on the Rock Island line, located at Front Street and Hickory Creek. The community first took off when steam engines began stopping here in 1852, quickly bringing a post office, general store, and local hotel. Today, Front Street serves as the main gathering place for village life.
