About Mount Ayr
Mount Ayr is Ringgold County’s seat, a southwest Iowa city founded in 1875 at the meeting of US 169 and Iowa 2. Its name nods to Ayr, Scotland, the birthplace of Robert Burns; ‘Mount’ was added for the high ground around the settlement. The county courthouse and a Carnegie library frame the town’s older civic story, while local records preserve the county’s early settlement history. Mount Ayr is a county-seat town with a Scottish namesake and a very Iowa habit of turning a crossroads into a home base.
