New Haven, VT

New Haven is the central settlement and CDP inside the Town of New Haven in Addison County, Vermont. The CDP covers about 2.68 square miles around the village center. Vermont Route 17 runs through the community, leading east toward Bristol and west to U.S. 7 at New Haven Junction, while Middlebury sits about eight miles south. Beeman Elementary School, the town office, Town Green, Congregational Church, small businesses, and Village Green Market cluster in this part of the larger farm town.

The New Haven River runs through the town and once powered mills and other local industry. New Haven Mills, at the junction of River Road, East Street, and Munger Street, lost its factories and store to fire, leaving the church as its surviving gathering place. The village became the town center as those older industrial communities declined. Today Route 17, the river, town offices, school, and remaining farms give the CDP its shape. It is a compact Vermont crossroads with a village green and a long river history.
