Nezperce, ID

Nezperce is Lewis County's seat, a Camas Prairie city of 458 people in the 2020 census. The city takes its name from the Nez Perce people whose homeland includes this landscape; the spelling is an anglicized form of the French phrase used by outsiders. State Highways 64, 62, and 162 meet in town, tying the prairie to Lewiston, Grangeville, and the Clearwater country. The broad, rolling prairie has long been a place for travel, farming, and gathering, well before the modern city took shape.

The railroad helped Nezperce become the commercial center of the prairie and influenced the vote that made it the Lewis County seat when the county was created in 1911. The city has one public school district, a grocery store, hotel and restaurant, newspaper, churches, library, visitor center and museum, and farm-related businesses. Nezperce Elementary and High School share a campus on Second Avenue, while the surrounding roads lead toward forests, reservoirs, and ski areas. Nezperce is a county seat with a small-town footprint and a big prairie view, its daily life still organized by school, farming, highways, and the name of the people who have long belonged to this country.
