Norfolk, CT

Norfolk is a Litchfield Hills town with a major summer music program at its center. The Norfolk Chamber Music Festival grew from the Stoeckels’ late-19th-century concerts and now operates through Yale School of Music; its 1906 Music Shed remains the main stage. The festival brings students, composers, and concertgoers to the Ellen Battell Stoeckel estate each summer, giving the town a professional music institution alongside its town offices, school district, and village stores. Norfolk’s old name is pronounced several ways by residents, a small local wrinkle in a town with deep New England roots.

Three state parks and a boat launch shape the other side of the map. Dennis Hill has the remnants of a summer pavilion, Haystack Mountain has its lookout tower, and Campbell Falls protects a waterfall and forested trail. Great Mountain Forest taps sugar maples in late winter, while Aton Forest runs ecological research and public workshops. Regional School District 7 serves Norfolk with neighboring towns. Norfolk is a place where a Yale summer music program, working forests, and state-park roads all meet in the same Litchfield Hills town.
