North Grosvenor Dale, CT

North Grosvenor Dale is a census-designated place in the town of Thompson, Windham County, along the French River. Local mill-history materials often write the name as North Grosvenordale, while the ranked place record uses North Grosvenor Dale. The 2020 census counted 1,464 residents. Connecticut Route 12 follows the river through the village, where the former mill pond and river walk still organize the central landscape.

Small textile mills appeared here early in the nineteenth century. After William Grosvenor acquired the mills and water privileges, the Grosvenor-Dale Company built a large brick mill in 1872 and worker housing along the French River. The mill village became a National Register historic district in 1993, with roughly 100 homes built for workers between 1872 and 1910. The former mill, North Grosvenordale Pond, river walk, and neighborhoods once called Swede Village, Greek Village, Three Rows, and the Long Blocks retain the shape of an industrial community. North Grosvenor Dale is a compact Thompson place where mill, river, worker housing, and Route 12 still sit in one frame.
