North Springfield, VT

North Springfield is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the town of Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont. The Black River gives the name a natural reference, while the post office has operated here since 1832. The 2020 census counted 694 residents in the CDP, which sits within the larger town of Springfield and its network of roads, businesses, and institutions. North Springfield's position is easy to place through the river, the town boundary, and the older postal connection that has kept the name in use for nearly two centuries.

The community's most unusual landmark is Stellafane Observatory, a National Historic Landmark associated with the Springfield Telescope Makers and the development of amateur telescope making. Black River Produce, a major food processor and distributor, is headquartered in the village, adding a current working institution to the older landscape. The Springfield Art and Historical Society has also placed its museum in North Springfield, beside the historic Cota and Cota building. The river, post office, observatory, food company, and museum give North Springfield a clear set of reference points. It is a compact Vermont place whose story moves from nineteenth-century mail service to modern manufacturing and the study of the night sky.
