About Norwich
Norwich's downtown grew at the head of the Thames River, where the Yantic and Shetucket meet. A public landing authorized in 1684 shifted activity from Norwichtown toward the harbor, and that water-facing center remains visible in the Heritage Riverfront Park and Walkway, where the city accepted a $192,000 state grant for improvements in 2025. Inland, Mohegan Park supplies a different kind of shared space: Spaulding Pond supports swimming and fishing, trails circle the grounds, and picnic tables, play equipment, rentable pavilions, and a rose garden are spread across the grounds. Downtown's Otis Library opens six days a week. Its 2026 calendar ranged from English- and Spanish-language technology help and legal clinics to children's summer learning, teen writing and game groups, and free weekday summer meals.

Dodd Stadium's current tenant is the Norwich Sea Unicorns, a collegiate summer baseball team in the Futures League. They entered 2026 as three-time defending league champions, and an April 2026 city agreement kept the team in place beyond that season while planning stadium renovations and broader year-round use. Slater Memorial Museum offers another civic constant. The 1886 Romanesque Revival building on the Norwich Free Academy campus displays art from five continents, a large cast collection of classical and Renaissance sculpture, and changing contemporary exhibitions.

SEAT buses meet at the Norwich Transportation Center, with local routes to areas including the West Side, Norwichtown, Backus Hospital, and Walmart, plus connections across southeastern Connecticut. Norwich's population stood at 40,125 in 2020. Its 2020-2024 housing profile recorded 54 percent owner occupancy, a median owner-occupied value of $242,300, median gross rent of $1,253, and median household income of $65,024. Nearly 24 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home, workers averaged 24 minutes of travel to work, and the poverty estimate was 17 percent.
