Nunda, NY

Nunda is a Livingston County village in the Keshequa Valley, where New York State Routes 408 and 436 meet near Keshequa Creek. The village lies inside the larger Town of Nunda, among hills, farm roads, and routes toward Geneseo and Dansville. Keshequa Central’s middle school, high school, and district offices are on Mill Street in Nunda; Dalton Elementary serves younger students in the same district. The village square, Bell Memorial Library, churches, and older houses give the center a civic shape that reaches back to the early 1800s.

The name comes from Nunda-wa-ono, associated with Seneca people who lived along the Genesee River and Keshequa Creek. Nunda’s town was organized in 1808, the village streets were laid out in 1823, and the village incorporated in 1839. A gristmill, stage route, canal work, and the Erie Railroad helped build the early economy. Trains reached Nunda Station in 1852, and a branch line later brought the depot closer to the village. Today the village remains the crossroads at the heart of a larger rural town.
