About Oak Creek

Oak Creek is a Routt County coal town with a name borrowed from scrub oak near the original site. It incorporated in 1907, and the coal story is still part of the town’s present: the Twentymile Mine remains an economic neighbor, while the local Whistle Trail points back to the area’s mining history. The town sits in southern Routt County, with Steamboat Springs farther north, and its schools belong to South Routt School District RE-3. The quick local read is simple: Oak Creek grew out of coal, carries that history in its trails and town plan, and still has the feel of a working valley place in Colorado’s mountain country.
