Pablo, MT

Pablo is a Lake County CDP of 2,138 residents in the 2020 census, and its importance comes from what is concentrated there: the headquarters of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, the seat of Flathead Reservation government, and Salish Kootenai College. The reservation is home to the Bitterroot Salish, upper Pend d’Oreille, and Kootenai, and stretches across more than 1.2 million acres between Missoula and Kalispell. Pablo is named for Michel Pablo, known for helping preserve the American bison. College and tribal government give Pablo a working institutional center. Salish Kootenai College, chartered in 1977, offers two- and four-year degrees, while the tribal economy includes timber, Kerr Dam revenue, technology companies, and enterprises serving members.

The People’s Center has long been the local place for museum exhibits and education about Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Kootenai history, though its 2020 fire is part of the recent story. Nearby Pablo National Wildlife Refuge and Flathead Lake country connect the town to wetlands, bison, and reservation lands.
