Park Ridge, IL

Located about 15 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and right next to O'Hare, Park Ridge offers a quick commute alongside a classic suburban feel. Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest line runs straight through town with stops at Uptown and Dee Road, making trips into the Loop straightforward for daily commuters. Most daily errands, dining, and local shopping happen in walkable pockets like Uptown and South Park. The city is also home to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital on Dempster Street, providing top-tier medical care and acting as one of the area's largest employers.

Park Ridge’s roots go back to the mid-nineteenth century, when the town was known as Brickton because of its booming clay brickyards. When the Great Chicago Fire destroyed much of the nearby metropolis in 1871, local brick was shipped down the rail line to help rebuild the city under stricter fire codes. The train tracks that carried materials into Chicago soon brought families looking for quieter neighborhoods out to the suburbs. That legacy is still easy to see today in the sturdy brick architecture, historic bungalows, and leafy, well-established residential streets throughout town.

Uptown serves as the town's lively center, blending everyday conveniences with historic charm around Northwest Highway and Prospect Avenue. Here you will find the public library, City Hall, independent coffee shops, and popular local restaurants clustered within walking distance of the train. The standout landmark of the district is the Pickwick Theatre, a 1928 Art Deco movie palace with a glowing marquee and tower designed by local artist Alfonso Iannelli. It still screens first-run movies and classic films, preserving a creative tradition that dates back to the city's days as a haven for Arts and Crafts artisans.

Green space and community gatherings are big parts of daily life here. Prospect Park offers walking paths, athletic fields, a playground, and a popular splash pad on the grounds of a former historic school, along with the Park Ridge History Center. Over at Hodges Park in Uptown, neighbors set out lawn chairs on warm summer evenings for free outdoor concerts and community events right across from City Hall. Between afternoon park visits, weekend farmers markets, and evenings catching a movie or dinner downtown, the city offers an active, welcoming suburban rhythm.
