Pawlet, VT

Pawlet is the central village and a census-designated place in the town of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont. The village sits at the intersection of Vermont Routes 30 and 133, on Flower Brook near its meeting with the Mettawee River. Route 30 follows the valley north toward Wells and southeast toward Dorset, while Route 133 begins here and heads north toward Middletown Springs. The streets gather at a useful crossroads, but the landscape quickly opens into farms, river bends, and the west side of the Taconic Mountains.

Pawlet was chartered in 1762 and developed as a collection of villages, hamlets, and farm roads, with no single dense center. Pawlet and West Pawlet considered separating in 1886 but remained part of the same town. The town plan's older homes, barns, churches, and village buildings sit within the Mettawee Valley's long agricultural view. Pawlet village is the hub of that arrangement, a place where two state routes, a brook, and a river bring the town's separate pieces together.
