Phippsburg, CO

Phippsburg is a Routt County community on State Highway 131 south of Oak Creek, with a post office, school, and lumber-mill history that reaches back to the 1880s. The Moffat Railroad bought land here in 1900 and built a roundhouse for locomotives serving the South Yampa Valley; miners and railroad workers followed, and the town took its name from Colorado senator Lawrence Phipps. The Iacovetto house, built for a family that arrived during the mining and railroad boom, still marks that period along the highway. Phippsburg is now a CDP in the Steamboat Springs micropolitan area, served by South Routt School District RE-3. Its story is written in the road, the old railroad corridor, and one surviving house from the coal-and-rail era.
