Phoenicia, NY

Phoenicia is the largest hamlet in the Town of Shandaken, set where the Esopus Creek and Stony Clove Creek meet beneath Mount Tremper, Romer Mountain, and Sheridan Mountain. The hamlet’s first post office dates to 1851; tanning, bluestone quarrying, logging, and farming made it a regional trading center before the Ulster and Delaware Railroad arrived in 1870. The first passenger train reached Phoenicia station on June 20 of that year, bringing stores, hotels, and a new connection to Catskill tourism.

The old railroad station now houses the Empire State Railway Museum, which preserves records, photographs, equipment, and personal histories from the Catskill Mountain lines. Route 28 and Route 214 still bring traffic through the center, while Onteora Central School District serves local students and the surrounding mountains organize seasonal travel. Phoenicia’s current economy includes visitor services, and its civic shape remains that of a railroad hamlet: a compact center, a preserved station, river confluence, and mountain roads opening into the Catskills.
