Pleasant Grove, UT

Battle Creek carries Pleasant Grove's first English name and the memory of a violent encounter that preceded permanent settlement. Timpanogos Ute families had long used the canyon and stream seasonally. On March 5, 1849, a Mormon militia surrounded and attacked a Timpanogos camp, killing four Ute men; women and children in the camp surrendered. The attack gave Battle Creek its English name. Latter-day Saint settlers established a permanent community in September 1850 and initially used the same name for the town. They soon changed it to Pleasant Grove. The creek still descends from the west face of Mount Timpanogos through the city, keeping the older name present in local geography.

Agriculture supplied Pleasant Grove with its longest-running public tradition. Strawberries were a major local crop from the 1920s through the 1950s, and the Wasatch Club organized the first Strawberry Day in 1921. A rodeo joined the celebration that same year. Nearby Geneva Steel later drew local workers into industrial employment and helped move the community away from a farm-centered economy. Strawberry Days still returns during the third week of June, with the rodeo, concerts, contests, and civic programs spread across several venues. The crop that once shaped local work still gives the annual celebration its name.

In 1853, settlers gathered their homes within a walled fort. Pleasant Grove's historic business district remains inside those old boundaries, and its street pattern still reflects the fort's blocks and broad roads. Main Street occupies the inherited center of a settlement that later spread west across former fields. The Historic Downtown Park, library, small businesses, and annual Heritage Jubilee keep the older center in use. In fiscal 2023, the city's library and arts program coordinated plays, choir and orchestra performances, concerts, and local-history work. Farther west, the Grove commercial district groups larger retail and automobile sites near the freeway, while the Grove Business Park includes offices and the dōTERRA campus. The general plan reserves other nearby land for hotels and event uses. The compact historic blocks around Main Street give way to larger sites and wider roads in the Grove districts.

Pleasant Grove's Christa McAuliffe Space Center grew from a classroom. It opened its first simulator at Central Elementary School on November 8, 1990; an expanded building completed in 2020 now contains spacecraft simulators and a planetarium for school and public programs. Student groups and public crews take assigned roles in mission-based simulations that combine science education with theatrical role-play. At the eastern edge of town, the Battle Creek Trail climbs steeply from the canyon mouth to a waterfall on Mount Timpanogos. The Forest Service also lists the route for mountain biking and horseback riding; it continues past smaller cascades onto the mountain's west face. The city's calendar and map preserve two different parts of its past: Strawberry Days recalls the farm economy, and the trail follows Battle Creek toward the canyon that gave the settlement its first English name.
