About Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley is a census-designated place in Barkhamsted, Connecticut, on the west side of the West Branch of the Farmington River. It is one of the town's two village centers, with Riverton farther along the same river branch. The waterway gives the area its basic shape, running through a narrow valley framed by forested hills, older homes, and roads that follow the river. Pleasant Valley also holds Barkhamsted's town hall and elementary school, so the small village serves as a civic center as well as a geographic one.

The surrounding forests add another layer to the local map. People's State Forest and American Legion State Forest occupy land near the village, and the river corridor includes old mill sites, trails, and places associated with the town's early settlement. The West Branch was later included in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, preserving the importance of the waterway in a modern setting. Pleasant Valley is a small Connecticut place, but its town hall, school, river, forests, and older village center make it one of the clearest reference points in Barkhamsted.
