About Poultney

Poultney village is the compact center of Vermont's Slate Valley, with Main Street, old churches and storefronts, and the former Green Mountain College campus all inside the town's larger map. The village started as a stop on the Albany-Montreal turnpike, then grew with the railroad, slate quarries, and the college. East Poultney, settled in 1771, keeps a separate historic district with a green, churches, store, post office, and museums. Lake St. Catherine and the Slate Valley Trails pull the landscape outward from the village. Poultney is the kind of Vermont place where school history, quarry work, and a New England village center sit close together.
