Proctor, VT

Proctor is a quiet Vermont village tucked into the Otter Creek valley, just a short drive northwest of Rutland. Its roots go straight back to the 19th-century marble boom, when the powerful Great Falls and rich stone deposits turned the former Sutherland Falls settlement into a bustling industrial center under the Vermont Marble Company. Today, with around 1,500 residents, it has settled into a peaceful, tight-knit community where history is still visible on almost every corner.

You can spot the town's heritage everywhere you look, from marble bridges and sidewalks to historic stone churches and the Vermont Marble Museum. Just down the road, the quirky turrets of Wilson Castle add an unexpected bit of Victorian flair.
