Rhododendron, OR

Rhododendron is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Clackamas County, Oregon, along U.S. 26 at the base of Mount Hood. The 2020 census counted 262 residents. The Mount Hood Scenic Byway runs through the community, and the forest, mountain slopes, and highway make Rhododendron a natural stopping point between the Portland region and Mount Hood’s recreation country. It is part of the Villages at Mount Hood, a local quasi-governmental organization that links several communities along the corridor. The forest begins at the roadside.

The Barlow Road, an Oregon Trail route, passed through the Mount Hood region, giving today’s highway corridor a much older travel history. Rhododendron’s local map is still built around movement: U.S. 26, forest roads, trailheads, cabins, and the routes that carry visitors toward the national forest and mountain. The community is small and unincorporated, but it sits in one of Oregon’s most recognizable mountain gateways, with the highway and the forest doing most of the town-making work.
