Roberts, ID

Roberts is a Jefferson County city about 14 miles northeast of Idaho Falls, on the edge of the Upper Snake River country. Its history begins under the name Market Lake: a stagecoach and trading stop, then a railroad station shipping agricultural products and supplies. The Butte & Market Lake Canal helped irrigate the surrounding fields, and in 1910 the town took the name Roberts in honor of H.A. Roberts of the Oregon Short Line. Farming and ranching still sit behind the local economy, even as the city is part of the Idaho Falls metro area.

For day-to-day errands, Roberts has a grocery store, gas station, cafe, restaurant, public park, and community center. Roberts Elementary is in town; middle and high school students attend Jefferson County School District 251 campuses in Menan and Rigby. The Snake River and Market Lake Wildlife Management Area frame the community with wetlands, farmland, and bird habitat, giving the city a geographic story that is older than its current municipal name. Market Lake Day and the community center keep that history attached to present local routines.
