Rocky Boy West, MT

Rocky Boy West is a census-designated place spread across Hill and Chouteau counties in the northwest part of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation. The 2020 census counted 1,042 residents, and Box Elder borders the community to the northwest. The larger reservation is home to the Chippewa Cree people; the name Rocky Boy grew from an English rendering of "Stone Child," the name associated with a Chippewa leader. The Bears Paw Mountains rise against the flatter country around the reservation.

The community's present-day setting is shaped by reservation institutions. Rocky Boy Schools serves students on the reservation and describes traditional heritage as part of its mission; schools are also among the area's largest employers. Tribal government, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Health Service, agriculture, livestock, wheat farming, and post-and-pole production all appear in the reservation economy. Stone Child College offers two-year degrees, while the tribally owned Bear Paw Ski Bowl and Chippewa-Cree Recreation Area connect the reservation to the Bears Paw Mountains. Rocky Boy West is therefore best understood as part of a wider community whose school, government, work, and cultural life are tied to the reservation's own institutions.
