Rollins, MT

Rollins is a Lake County census-designated place on the west shore of Flathead Lake, just north of the Flathead Indian Reservation. White settlement began in the 1880s, when the area was known as Bay View; the post office adopted Rollins in 1904. The community follows the lake's long shoreline, with Highway 93, forested slopes, open ranch land, and boat routes tying homes and small gathering places to Polson and the wider Flathead basin. Steamers such as the Montana, Eva Bee, Klondike, and City of Polson once sounded their whistles on the lake, giving Rollins a transportation history that was waterborne before the modern highway took over.

The old Rollins school building still belongs to the school district and is used by the Rollins Community Club, volunteer fire district, and Women of Rollins Club. That reuse says a lot about the place: there is no need for a dense center when one building, the lake, the road, and volunteer groups can carry much of the community's shared work. Today the Rollins Rural Fire District serves a wide, forested area, while Flathead Lake supplies the recreation and scenery. Rollins is a lakeshore community with a post-office name, a schoolhouse still in service, and a long memory of boats along the west shore.
