Sawmill, AZ

Located in the forested hill country of northeastern Arizona, Sawmill (known in Navajo as Ni'iijíhí) is a quiet Navajo Nation community about twenty miles north of Window Rock. The town originally grew around early twentieth-century logging operations and a historic trading post near Fluted Rock. While the local timber mill closed in the 1990s, the surrounding ponderosa pines and deep local history continue to define the area.

Today, everyday life centers on the local Chapter House, which helps manage community resources, road upkeep, and support for area families and ranchers. Most school-age kids attend classes in the Window Rock Unified School District, and residents typically head south into Window Rock or Fort Defiance for major shopping and healthcare services. Between its high-elevation setting and strong neighborhood ties, Sawmill provides a peaceful, traditional reservation lifestyle.
