When Woodfield Mall opened in 1971 as the largest indoor shopping center in the country, it completely transformed Schaumburg. Established subdivisions feature mature tree-lined streets, single-family homes, and neighborhood parks. New entertainment and community spaces continue to grow, especially at the 90 North district north of the mall, which features new park grounds, summer outdoor concert series, and indoor go-karting. If you prefer getting outdoors, Spring Valley Nature Center offers 135 acres of prairies, wetlands, and shaded hiking trails. Inside the preserve sits Volkening Heritage Farm, a restored 1880s living history site where families can visit farm animals and see how early German settlers farmed the land long before the expressways arrived.
