Schoeneck, PA

Schoeneck is a Lancaster County community whose name comes from Pennsylvania Dutch for “pretty corner.” Swiss Mennonites settled here in 1733 after purchasing 1,500 acres from the Penn brothers, drawn by heavy timber and limestone ground. The original town was laid out around 1780–90, and the place now sits in West Cocalico Township, about five miles north of Ephrata. With 1,056 residents in the 2010 census, it is small enough that the township and community names overlap in everyday directions.

The old settlement’s practical life still shows through its institutions. Schoeneck Volunteer Fire Company serves as a local gathering point, while the elementary school that had stood here for generations closed in 2011. West Cocalico’s history also includes nearby Reinholds, ironworking, and the Reading & Columbia Railroad’s effect on local prosperity. Schoeneck is a good example of a Pennsylvania Dutch village whose landscape holds several time periods at once: early Mennonite farms, limestone and timber, school and firehouse routines, and the commuter geography of northern Lancaster County. The name sounds decorative, but the place was built around work.
