Siena College, NY

Siena College is a census-designated place in Albany County, New York, centered on the Franciscan college campus in Loudonville just north of Albany. The campus began in September 1937, when seven Franciscan friars from St. Bonaventure opened a small Catholic college on the Garrett estate. The old farmhouse served as classrooms, offices, and friar living space; when more students arrived than expected, classes spilled into unlikely corners until Siena Hall rose in 1938. The college took its name from St. Bernardine of Siena, the Franciscan preacher and missionary.

The campus grew from a 38-acre farm into a larger academic setting with residence halls, science buildings, athletic fields, and the friary that still keeps the Franciscan connection visible. It became coeducational in 1969 and has long been part of the Capital Region’s Loudonville landscape.
