Somonauk, IL

Somonauk is a village straddling the DeKalb-LaSalle County line, with the Chicago metropolitan area on one side of the boundary and the Ottawa micropolitan area on the other. The 2020 census counted 1,786 residents. The name comes from the Potawatomi language, and the village sits along Somonauk Creek, a tributary of the Fox River. That county-line position gives the place a wider regional map than its size might suggest. Sannauk Forest Preserve is Somonauk’s clearest shared outdoor and historical reference.

The 73-acre preserve lies between Somonauk and Sandwich, carries an Illinois-Wisconsin boundary marker, and includes woods, wetlands, fishing along Somonauk Creek, picnic shelters, and trails. A 1.5-mile limestone path runs from the Somonauk Library to the preserve, linking the village’s civic center with the county forest system. Lake Holiday adds another nearby water-oriented residential pocket to the village’s map.
