South Barre, VT

South Barre is a census-designated place in the town of Barre, Washington County, along Vermont Route 14 and the Stevens Branch of the Winooski River. The 2020 census counted 1,193 residents. Barre Town's municipal plan calls South Barre its Upper Village: the town's first settlement and an early center of activity. That location still gives the CDP a clear physical form, with Route 14 following the branch toward Barre City and the waterway continuing into the wider Winooski River system.

Barre Town's municipal services are visible here through a fire station in the South Barre village. The wider Barre area supplies the library and school connections: Aldrich Public Library's mission serves residents of both Barre Town and Barre City, and the nearby city carries the region's granite-industry history.
