South Rockwood, MI

South Rockwood is a Monroe County village within Berlin Charter Township, at the mouth of the Huron River about five miles from Lake Erie. The 2020 census counted 1,587 residents. John Strong founded the community in 1863 and named it for Rockwood, Ontario; the nearby Rockwood to the north gives the village its "South" designation. The Huron River forms the village's northern edge and the Monroe-Wayne county line, giving South Rockwood a clear boundary on the map. Airport Community Schools serves the village, while the river links South Rockwood to Rockwood and the broader southeast Michigan shoreline.

The river mouth is the village's clearest shared landmark, linking the village to Rockwood and Lake Erie. The village sits in the northern part of Berlin Township, with Monroe-area roads and the Huron waterfront doing more to define daily orientation than a separate downtown.
