Stanberry, MO

Stanberry is a Gentry County city in northwest Missouri, laid out in 1879 when the Wabash Railroad reached the site. The town took its name from J. Stanberry, the original owner of the town tract, and a post office has carried the name since that same year. U.S. Routes 136 and 169 meet in the surrounding road network, with Albany and King City each about eleven miles away. Wildcat Creek runs along the south side, giving the town a low-water edge beyond its streets.

Stanberry still has the institutions of a county crossroads: city utilities, a library, a baseball field, a swimming pool, and a civic calendar that runs through Main Street. Gentry County Library and Stanberry R-II School District keep books and classrooms close to town, while nearby farms fill out the landscape between the highways. The railroad created Stanberry's first durable connection, but its present shape comes from local services, school activities, recreation, and the creek and roads that tie this small Missouri city to the rest of Gentry County.
